Diligence and Grit

2) Executive Function Skills

We practise effective learning and self-regulation skills diligently

Mastering effective learning and self-regulation skills

Skills are built, not born. We learn from teachers and coaches who are masters of different subject skills and learning skills. Executive Function Skills help us achieve our goals more effectively. They include
• Self-Regulation, which is the ability to plan, organise, reflect, act on feedback and control impulses and emotions. • Working Memory, which is the ability to hold information in our mind and use it while doing a task. • Flexible Thinking, which is the ability to switch perspectives, adapt to change and ambiguity comfortably and apply critical thinking in different scenarios.

Skills are built, not born. We learn from teachers and coaches who are masters of different subject skills and learning skills. Executive Function Skills help us achieve our goals more effectively. They include

• Self-Regulation, which is the ability to plan, organise, reflect, act on feedback and control impulses and emotions.

We are accountable for our roles and duties, making good judgement, and are reliable at fulfilling our obligations.

Maintaining healthy life

Health is the fundamental condition of our growth. It is the important energy and strength that determines how strong and far we can achieve. To grow well, we shall sleep well, eat well, exercise well by

• Completing our homework first and fast, before our leisure.

• Getting ready to sleep by 10pm, as our body starts to produce melatonin at 9.30pm to help us sleep well.

• Having 7-8 hours of sleep daily, as our body needs 7-8 hours to repair and grow stronger, and our brain needs 7-8 hours to transfer all our learning from our short-term memory to our long-term memory. If not, we will fall sick easily because of weak immune system and forget many things we learnt.

• Eating breakfast before school starts. Breakfast replenishes our body with glucose to boost energy and alertness after an overnight fast, providing essential nutrients for good health and concentration. Breakfast gives our body and brain the energy to function, prevent fainting in the morning, and improves memory, concentration and performance in school and work.

• Eating nutritiously with each meal comprising! plate of wholegrains! plate of protein, and " plate of fruits and vegetables.

• Engaging in regular exercise of at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity weekly.

Participating in learning activities attentively without causing disruption. Completing all assignments with quality effort. Organising our schedule and meet all deadlines. Finding out from teachers or friends promptly on the learning we miss. Informing the teachers if many deadlines converge in the same period. Checking that we do not participate in too many activities that distract us from learning and meeting deadlines. Engaging in meaningful activities during break time including recess and lunch. Respecting learning time and space. As such we will Not trespass into places when they are not designated for our learning, such as other people’s classrooms during lunch and recess. Not waste time at the toilet or sick bay. Not malinger and walk around the school during learning time.

We should be physically and mentally present in all learning activities. Therefore, we shall put in our best effort in attendance and punctuality. We will diligently observe the following.
It is our responsibility to set the alarm clock to wake up early so that we have enough time for daily grooming, breakfast and reach the school assembly area (plaza or classroom) at 0730 even if there is rain or traffic congestion. We will report directly to the General Office if we are late for school and obtain a “Student Movement Slip” before proceeding to the classroom. Attendance is compulsory for all school activities (including CCA and school events). If we are unable to attend any school activity, it is our responsibility to inform the Class Mentor or teacher-in-charge before the start of the school activity. We must submit one of the following either via Parent Gateway or upon returning to school: Medical certificate. Official documents from external agency recognised by the school. Letter from parent/guardian for at most 2 days per term (for personal illness, emergencies at home, death of immediate family member). Failure to submit the above will mean that we have committed truancy. Should we be absent from weighted assessments or examinations, a medical certificate or official document must be submitted to cover the period of absence. We will be given zero for the paper(s) we missed if we failed to do so. Letter from parent is not considered an official document. We need to seek our principal’s approval at least 7 working days before travelling out of Singapore during the school term. A formal letter from the parent/guardian must be submitted. (Private holiday is not considered to be a valid reason during curriculum time.)
