Chinese Orchestra
Initiated in 2009, the GSS Chinese Orchestra gathers students with a love for music and culture.
Mr Mike Chiang Kum Mun, the Orchestra's Music Director, has guided the orchestra's growth since its founding. Mr Chiang is a young talented homegrown musician with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) and the Huqin Quartet. He is also the Music Director of Nanyang Polytechnic Chinese Orchestra, Mayflower Secondary School and Manjusri Secondary School. In 2004, he led Manjusri Secondary School Chinese Orchestra to a cultural and music exchange trip to Shanghai and Nanjing. He also directed the Nanyang Polytechnic Chinese Orchestra in the 18th Australian International Music Festival June 2007 and the orchestra successfully clinched ‘Gold' in the adjudication among 26 participated groups. Furthermore, Mayflower Secondary School Chinese Orchestra also successfully clinched ‘Gold' at the SYF Central Judging 2009.
Under the baton and guidance of Mr Mike as well as a team of professional instructors, the orchestra strives to perform a great variety of repertoire, ranging from traditional music and challenging contemporary works. In Spectrum IV 2009, the opening by the percussions and the orchestra's performance on WuShi amazed the audience with the drastic progress of the orchestra in less than a year!
In addition, the orchestra hopes to reach out to other Secondary School students by increasing interaction between various orchestras and industry professionals to provide greater exposure and training for personal development.
